Description

Greetings foster/adoptive parents and caregivers!

Becoming a foster and/or adoptive parent can present its own unique challenges, especially when the children involved have a complex history of trauma.

The Foster Parent Training Program, housed at the UK TRC, is offering a virtual training series focused on equipping foster/adoptive parents and other caregivers with the information and tools required to meet the needs of these children through a trauma-informed perspective.

We hope you’ll join us for our upcoming session

Internet Safety

July 12, 2022

10:00 AM- 12:00 PM (EST)

Registration Deadline July 10, 2022

About the Speaker: Carla has a master’s in psychology. She has facilitated parenting classes for almost 20 years in both KY and MI. She is the FPTP Coordinator and Training Specialist at the CoSW Training Resource Center. She is trained in Nurturing Parenting, Arise, Coming Together for Racial Understanding, Mental Health CPR and more. She also holds a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Leadership Certificate from the College of Agriculture Communities and Environment at the University of KY.

Carla is an advocate and mentor. She has served on several boards like the Southern Bluegrass Citizen Review Panel (Past-Chair), Kentucky Extension Diversity & Inclusion Network (Past-Chair) and Prevent

Child Abuse KY (Partner in Prevention). She volunteers for organizations that provide educational, advocacy and mentoring to youth like Frankie’s Corner and Community Inspired Solutions. Carla is dedicated to increasing capacity and providing individuals and families with tools to increase parenting, social, interpersonal, and leadership skills.

About the Program: The internet is a powerful tool that provides an easy, convenient way to access a wealth of information. It also provides opportunities to engage and catch up with friend’s using social media.  Although it is fun and engaging, it can be very dangerous for adults and youth alike. Online activity places us at risk for identity theft and other cybercrimes. Join us on April 4, 2022, from 10:00am- 12:00pm (EST) as we discuss Internet Safety. During this session, parents will:

  • Learn strategies to protect their identity and other personal information while online.
  • Learn to recognize potentially unsafe, dangerous or risky online situations and behaviors.
  • Learn how to talk to youth about internet safety.
  • Learn best practices for keeping youth safe while online.
  • Identify strategies to use when encountering potentially unsafe, dangerous or risky online situations and behaviors.
  • Participants will also learn how to activate parental controls on popular devices like the Xbox, PlayStation iPad and Android Tablets.
  • Learn to model appropriate online behavior.

This training provides families with the tools needed to keep their families safe while online. We hope you will join us.

This training is approved for 2 credit hours for ongoing, elective training credit for Kentucky foster parents. Though the training is delivered virtually, it fulfills the face-to-face, group setting requirement. A reliable internet connection and computer/ smartphone with webcam are required.
